Ten Totally Hilarious Children's Books That Everyone Will Love

April 4, 2023

For my next post in this series, I thought I would bring to your attention the silliest, wittiest and funniest books that I have ever found, books that keep adults going with a wry smile as the kids are happily entertained, books for all. It’s particularly sweet when a book that everyone appreciates comes along… so without further ado…

10. ‘The Book With No Pictures’ by B. J. Novak, Puffin.

To start we have ‘The Book With No Pictures’ which, as much as it pains me as an illustrator to say this, is really very funny, without even having ANY pictures in it. Shock. Horror. B. J. Novak (the guy from ‘The American Office’ who knew?) wrote this little number and kids find it hilarious. I couldn’t help but crack a smile too.

9. ‘I am a Tiger’ by Karl Newson and Ross Collins, Macmillan Children’s Books.

This book is a funny little find, not as hilarious as some to come, but witty and cleverly written. My kids crack up so much when we read this one! It keeps you guessing.

8. ‘Oi Frog!’ by Kes Gray & Jim Field, Hodder.

This is a brilliant book, it just gets funnier and funnier, the illustrations bring the characters to life and add so much brilliance to the proceedings. We all very much love this one - a must have!

7. ‘The Day The Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers, Harper Collins.

This book is literally amazing! It is so witty, clever and well illustrated (from one of my all-time favourite illustrators, the one and only Oliver Jeffers.) This one will have you all chuckling along, most of the jokes will likely fly over your child’s head, but you will both be highly entertained, I love how silly it is.

6. ‘Beast Feast’ by Emma Yarlett, Walker Books.

Written by the insanely talented author/illustrator, who also happens to be my best friend, Emma Yarlett (for real life!) This novelty book is exceedingly clever and funny, with lots of details to spot, letters to actually lift open and more, join a child dubbed ‘dinner’ as he persuades the monster who has caught him not to eat him…

5. ‘I Want My Hat Back’ by Jon Klassen, Walker Books.

This book really is the definition of ‘dry humour’, it’s simply hilarious, and I’m not sure your kids will understand why you will be laughing your head off, but they will still enjoy the story. I know people without kids who own this book, it is that good. Just trust me and read it, you will not be disappointed.

4. ‘Not Now, Bernard’ by David McKee, Anderson Press.

This book, I don’t even know where to start! It has such a dark humour to it, you will be holding back your laughter. Oh Bernard, if only your parents had paid more attention to you… it follows the tragic story of Bernard, who gets eaten by a monster, but his parents are so busy that they don’t even notice… and the hilarity ensues.

3. ‘Kitchen Disco’ by Clare Foges and Al Murphy, Faber & Faber.

This book is a total GEM! Kids and adults alike will find this so funny and be highly entertained, a rare book that works so well for everyone. My friend bought us this book for my son’s birthday, and ever since it has been a firm favourite in our house with us all, we love it! You must also check out ‘Veg Patch Party’ (https://amzn.to/3KaH7GB) and ‘Bathroom Boogie’ (https://amzn.to/3U4NfoF) which are equally as fun!

‘So move you hips, shake your pips and let’s get all excited!’ is a refrain commonly heard in our house.

2. ‘The First Slodge’ by Jeanne Willis and Jenni Desmond, Little Tiger Press.

I mean, when my daughter brought this home from the library recently, I was like, what on earth is this book? ‘Once upon a slime, there was a slodge…’ this book is just so random and hilarious, my girls absolutely wet themselves when we read it and I find it pretty hilarious too. A must have for your funny book collection, this will definitely keep everyone entertained!

1. ‘Steven Seagull Action hero’ by Elys Dolan, Oxford University Press.

This book is one of my all time favourites, I secretly cheer when my little boy picks it for bedtime reading. It has so many layers and is simply hilarious, it really is. Oh Lola, Claude Von Crabb. The puns and jokes will have you cracking up so much, Elys Dolan is some sort of genius with an amazing sense of humour. Everyone in the family will love this one!

Ten Gorgeous Books For Children This Easter

March 23, 2023

*This blog post contains affiliate links, as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Spring is in the air, the flowers in my garden are starting to bloom and my kids are dreaming about chocolate… which can only mean one thing…Easter is nearly upon us! So compiled below are my top ten picture books for Easter, the ones we tend to get out every year. So without further preamble…

10. ‘How To Track An Easter Bunny’ by Sue Fliess and Simona Sanfilippo, Sky Pony Press.

First of all we have ‘How To Track an Easter Bunny’. This extremely cute book is a great addition to your Easter shelf, Simona Sanfilippo’s illustrations perfectly compliment the whimsical rhyming text by Sue Fliess and the little bunnies are really very sweet! A lovely story for Easter, telling the tale of four children as they attempt to trap the Easter bunny…

9. ‘Everybunny Dance’ by Ellie Sandall, Hodder.

This little book was picked up by my daughter in our local library recently and it has become a firm favourite in our house. I love it, the illustrations are beautiful but also the twist at the end really got me! There is much more to it than first meets the eye and your little ones will love it. Not strictly ‘Easter’ themed, but it definitely works well alongside other Easter titles with all those bunnies breaking it down!

8. ‘A Very Happy Easter’ by Tim Thornborough and Jennifer Davison, The Good Book Company.

This book is perfect for introducing preschoolers to Jesus and the real story of Easter. The bright and bold characters are lovely, the clear text tells the story so well and it just works perfectly for this younger age group. I love how certain words are picked out and made bold, this is a great introduction to the story of Easter.

7. ‘Mr Bunny’s Chocolate Factory’ by Elys Dolan, Oxford University Press.

This book is completely hilarious and one of my little boy’s favourites, it is such a wonderful one for Easter. It always has us chuckling along as we read it together, all the brilliant comments made by the chickens in the little speech bubbles really get us! Where is Debbie?!? We particularly appreciate ‘Edgar’ the quality control unicorn. Such a clever concept, appealing to young and old alike and getting the balance between them just right, this really is a cracking book.

6. ‘Our Easter Adventure’ by Emma Randall, Penguin Workshop.

Ok guilty! You caught me, this is one of mine. But, if I do say so myself (and I never usually do) this is a good children’s book for Easter, it follows four children as they track down the Easter bunny all the way back to his magical cave… where the eggs are made. I tried to cram as much joyful spring time colour, flowers and pattern into this book as I could, if you choose to add it to your collection, I hope you enjoy it.

5. ‘Easter is Coming’ by Tama Fortner and Wazza Pink, B & H Publishing Group.

A new addition for us this year, this book is truly gorgeous, the characters, the floral details, and the colours are all so beautiful, all making it an amazing book to add to your collection too. It explains the true story of Easter in a lovely and clear way, nothing is shied away from and I love the repeated refrain of hope: ‘Easter is coming.’

4. ‘Bunny Roo, I Love You’ by Melissa Marr and Teagan White, Nancy Pulson Books.

Again, not an overtly ‘Easter’ book, but it certainly gives off Spring time vibes. This is such sweet, heart warming little book, conveying the message of love to little ones with the most stunning illustrations from one of my favourite illustrators, Teagan White. Her work is so painstakingly detailed and painted mostly by hand- she is such an inspiration. If only for the breathtaking illustrations alone, this book deserves a place on your Easter shelf.

3. ‘Bare Tree and Little Wind: A Story For Holy Week’ by Mitali Perkins and Khoa Le, Waterbrook Press.

‘Bare Tree and Little Wind’ is another new discovery for this year, it is just wonderful. It uniquely tell us the Easter story from the perspective of an old palm tree and ‘little wind,’ it is actually quite an emotional read, a little more serious than perhaps the other titles I have suggested, but that is no bad thing! Full of layered meaning, reaching adults on one level and children on another. The illustrations are also so sophisticated and beautiful, delighting all who read it. This book is one of a kind and I am so pleased to have found it and have it in our Easter collection at home.

2. ‘We’re Going On An Egg Hunt: A Lift The Flap Adventure’ by Martha Mumford and Laura Hughes, Bloomsbury.

I mean, who doesn’t love a ‘lift'-the-flap’ book? Especially when accompanied by such lovely, wistful illustrations. I just love Laura Hughes’ work, the illustrations here are just divine, full of texture and colour. We all love this book and read it time and time again at Easter, there is so much to spot and chat about - the kids love pointing out all of the eggs to find and talking about the sweet bunnies. Told in the same format as ‘We’re Going On A Bear Hunt’, Mumford cleverly takes us on a fun egg hunt around the countryside. This one is a must-have, if you don’t already own it that is!

1. ‘The Garden, The Curtain and The Cross’ by Carl Laferton and Cataline Echeverri, The Good Book Company.

My all-time favourite book for Easter is ‘The Garden, The Curtain and The Cross.’ It takes us right back to Genesis, then on through the ages up until the Easter story and through until Revelation. The text is so cleverly written so children are able to understand these difficult concepts - and Catalina’s quirky, bright and fun illustrations draw you in and make the story even more accessible. It is an important and beautiful book and deserves to take pride of place on your Easter book shelf. We love it!
