For my next post in this series, I thought I would bring to your attention the silliest, wittiest and funniest books that I have ever found, books that keep adults going with a wry smile as the kids are happily entertained, books for all. It’s particularly sweet when a book that everyone appreciates comes along… so without further ado…
10. ‘The Book With No Pictures’ by B. J. Novak, Puffin.
To start we have ‘The Book With No Pictures’ which, as much as it pains me as an illustrator to say this, is really very funny, without even having ANY pictures in it. Shock. Horror. B. J. Novak (the guy from ‘The American Office’ who knew?) wrote this little number and kids find it hilarious. I couldn’t help but crack a smile too.

9. ‘I am a Tiger’ by Karl Newson and Ross Collins, Macmillan Children’s Books.
This book is a funny little find, not as hilarious as some to come, but witty and cleverly written. My kids crack up so much when we read this one! It keeps you guessing.

8. ‘Oi Frog!’ by Kes Gray & Jim Field, Hodder.
This is a brilliant book, it just gets funnier and funnier, the illustrations bring the characters to life and add so much brilliance to the proceedings. We all very much love this one - a must have!

7. ‘The Day The Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers, Harper Collins.
This book is literally amazing! It is so witty, clever and well illustrated (from one of my all-time favourite illustrators, the one and only Oliver Jeffers.) This one will have you all chuckling along, most of the jokes will likely fly over your child’s head, but you will both be highly entertained, I love how silly it is.

6. ‘Beast Feast’ by Emma Yarlett, Walker Books.
Written by the insanely talented author/illustrator, who also happens to be my best friend, Emma Yarlett (for real life!) This novelty book is exceedingly clever and funny, with lots of details to spot, letters to actually lift open and more, join a child dubbed ‘dinner’ as he persuades the monster who has caught him not to eat him…

5. ‘I Want My Hat Back’ by Jon Klassen, Walker Books.
This book really is the definition of ‘dry humour’, it’s simply hilarious, and I’m not sure your kids will understand why you will be laughing your head off, but they will still enjoy the story. I know people without kids who own this book, it is that good. Just trust me and read it, you will not be disappointed.

4. ‘Not Now, Bernard’ by David McKee, Anderson Press.
This book, I don’t even know where to start! It has such a dark humour to it, you will be holding back your laughter. Oh Bernard, if only your parents had paid more attention to you… it follows the tragic story of Bernard, who gets eaten by a monster, but his parents are so busy that they don’t even notice… and the hilarity ensues.

3. ‘Kitchen Disco’ by Clare Foges and Al Murphy, Faber & Faber.
This book is a total GEM! Kids and adults alike will find this so funny and be highly entertained, a rare book that works so well for everyone. My friend bought us this book for my son’s birthday, and ever since it has been a firm favourite in our house with us all, we love it! You must also check out ‘Veg Patch Party’ (https://amzn.to/3KaH7GB) and ‘Bathroom Boogie’ (https://amzn.to/3U4NfoF) which are equally as fun!
‘So move you hips, shake your pips and let’s get all excited!’ is a refrain commonly heard in our house.

2. ‘The First Slodge’ by Jeanne Willis and Jenni Desmond, Little Tiger Press.
I mean, when my daughter brought this home from the library recently, I was like, what on earth is this book? ‘Once upon a slime, there was a slodge…’ this book is just so random and hilarious, my girls absolutely wet themselves when we read it and I find it pretty hilarious too. A must have for your funny book collection, this will definitely keep everyone entertained!

1. ‘Steven Seagull Action hero’ by Elys Dolan, Oxford University Press.
This book is one of my all time favourites, I secretly cheer when my little boy picks it for bedtime reading. It has so many layers and is simply hilarious, it really is. Oh Lola, Claude Von Crabb. The puns and jokes will have you cracking up so much, Elys Dolan is some sort of genius with an amazing sense of humour. Everyone in the family will love this one!
